Weekend in Yzerfontein |
The Auberge Bed and Breakfast |
11 / 12 September 2004 |
Rob took Karen on a surprise weekend away to Yzerfontein. He found what looked like a charming bed and breakfast on the internet. Unfortunately the reality was quite different to the pictures on the net!! We were the only people staying there, as apparently they had a cancellation that left all their rooms empty. (Tour bus or something.)
The first room to which we were shown had the mattress propped up against the wall and no bed linen. The next room was made up so our hostess told us we could use that one. However, this one did not appear to have been cleaned in a while. There were plenty of cobwebs and spiders around. There was a trail of ants going up the wall and everything looked rather dirty. Their decor was also rather dodgy - strange looking pictures on the wall that looked slightly spooky. Anyway, we thought we would brave it.
We got up early for the breakfast on the Saturday, which looked like it had been sitting on the table for a LONG time. You know when the food starts to "sweat" when it has been out for a while, under plastic? Ours was very sweaty. We stuck to muesli and milk as the safest option! On heading out to see the wild flowers, we took a detour to see a development, Pearl Heights. To cut a long story short, we bought a plot there on impulse! The views are stunning, as it is a cliffside plot. The photos are below. We had a quick drive through the National Park afterwards to see the flowers before they all closed.
On Sunday, we again stuck to muesli for breakfast, before checking out. We headed back to Cape Town, via Darling, to see some more flowers.
